Experience Overview

The Swiss Alps could be considered the home of trail running. Mountain runners have been weaving their way along alp paths for decades, and are practically exalted here. Be prepared to be greeted with an Allez-Allez! or a Bon Chance! when you run by local farmers. With a fantastic network of trails and huts and a long history and appreciation of running, Switzerland is a trail runner’s dream.

The diversity of the Jungfrau Region is a huge draw for trail running enthusiasts, with everything from easy trails through forests and meadows to technically challenging trails in alpine terrain. Some trail running routes are also popular with hikers.

Arrive in Switzerland and transfer by train and to our meeting point in the mountain village of Mürren. A gem of a village in one of the most beautiful locations in the Alps, Mürren is a quiet and peaceful place and has remained blissfully car-free. We’ll meet in the evening and talk about the week to come over dinner tonight at our friendly hotel.

One favorite run takes us to the back of the Lauterbrunnen valley, a nature preserve, to the idyllic Obersteinberg inn, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. There you’ll have the option for a shorter return along the valley floor or a long, spectacular high traverse around the back of the valley. Return by cable car to our car-free, clifftop village.

One favorite run, and a classic trail in the region, starts with a historic cogwheel train ride to Schynige Platte, perched high on a ridge with incredible mountain views to the south and birds-eye lake views to the north. We’ll run to the beautiful Bachalpsee lake with the option to descend to town by gondola or on foot.

Starting from the small mountain inn at Alpiglen, and weaving high into the mountains to the base of the Eiger’s dramatic North Face. The trail leads to Kleine Scheidegg where our views are filled with mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. Finish with a mellow, flat run to Mannlichen where we descend to town by gondola. You will be on your own tonight for dinner.

FAQ

FLIGHTS

We specialise in arranging excellent trail running holidays, but do not book International flights. There a great variety of flights departing from all over the world to Berne (BRN) Airport which is 53.7 km away.

VISAS

European Union citizens do not need a visa to visit Switzerland.

GROUP MANAGEMENT

Being a group of max. 12 runners with a mixture of ages and running abilities we may decide to split into flexible groups, all of which will be supported by our running guides who will travel with us on the trip.By splitting the group will allow us all to move more fluidly, allowing all team members to run at their own comfortable pace, without feeling pressured.

TRAIL RUNNING

The Swiss Alps could be considered the home of trail running. Mountain runners have been weaving their way along alp paths for decades, and are practically exalted here. The Eiger Ultra incorporates unrivaled dramatic mountain scenery.

The diversity of the Jungfrau Region is a huge draw for trail running enthusiasts, with everything from easy trails through forests and meadows to technically challenging trails in alpine terrain. Some trail running routes are also popular with hikers.

TEMPERATURE

July in Eiger is a mild summer month, with average temperature varying between 15.6°C (60.1°F) and 5.7°C (42.3°F). This is the month with the most sunshine, with an average of 8.9h of sunshine.

LUGGAGE

We recommend packing one set of running kit per day, with warm and cold options, plus a change of clothes for each evening. It can be cold in the evenings and even during the day, particularly when we are up high in the mountains. A lightweight running pack with the ability to carry water & other necessary items, plus a good quality waterproof jacket (gore-tex or equivalent) are also required. For each trip, we will send you a list of essential items and a suggested packing list. Please contact us if you have any concerns about what you need to bring on one of our trips.
